FCC Narrowband Mandate Affects RTK/GPS Users
SANTA CLARA, Calif., October 8, 2003 – The
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has amended the rules to
prohibit any application for new operations using 25 kHz channels.
This is in an effort to promote efficient radio spectrum use and
accelerate the move to 12.5 kHz narrowband channels. These rules
cover VHF and UHF frequencies commonly used for survey and other
RTK/GPS applications.
Surveyors and others that use RTK/GPS technology
for precision applications in surveying and machine control may
be impacted by this mandate. Currently, most precision applications
make use of narrowband radio frequencies that are licensed for
25 kHz channels. Users that have an existing licensed system may
continue to operate their systems without change. Current users
should review their licensing and make sure that the area of coverage
and number of transmitters is up to date. If not, current users
should contact a licensing service immediately to meet the pending
deadlines.
New users will be required to operate on 12.5 kHz
channels. Note that most equipment, including all Pacific Crest
Corporation and Trimble equipment, is capable of operating on both
25 kHz and 12.5 kHz channels. New users must configure the equipment
such that it is compliant with the narrower channel spacing. Contact
your radio modem vendor for instructions regarding the required
configuration.
